pl., ia. A genus of microscopic fungi belonging to the class Schizomycetes, order Bacteriaceae. It includes all the forms with straight, inflexible, linear body and without flagella. Migula's classification into families is: Coccaceae, Bacteriaceae, Spirillaceae, Chlamydobacteriaceae, Beggiatoaceae. The so-called non-motile bacilli, such as B. anthracis, according to the classification of Migula, should each be called "bacterium", as B. anthracis. [Gr.]
