[Latin] A genus of parasitic nematode worms. F. medinensis, Guinea worm; a worm found in tropical countries, which, when young, enters the body, and upon growing to the adult size ( a foot or more in length) comes beneath the surface of the skin and forms a painful boil which finally ruptures and discharges the worm. The microscopic embryos of F. sanguinis hominis are found in the blood in chyluria and in African lethargy. In chyluria the parent worm is contained in the lymphatic passages. Its presence in the lymphatics is also said to occasion elephantiasis. One variety of F. sanguinis (F. nocturna) is found in the blood at night only; another (F. diurna) only in the daytime; and a third (F. perstans) occurs both day and night. Filariasis, Filariosis, the condition produced by a f.; as Filariosis elephantiastica.
