-
mik-s[=e]-d[=e]'ma, n. a diseased condition occurring in adults, generally females, characterised by a thickening of the subcutaneous tissue, most noticeable in the face, with a simultaneous dulling of all the faculties and slowing of the movements of the body. A precisely similar condition occurs in many cases where the thyroid gland has been removed for disease. [Gr. myxa, mucus, and Eng. edema.]

-
[Greek] A condition in which the subcutaneous tissues, especially of the face and hands, are distended with a mucous liquid, producing a hard, puffy, translucent swelling (solid oedema) which does not pit upon pressure. It is accompanied by inertness of mind and sluggishness of body, and by unsteadiness of gait and thickness of speech due to the swelling. It is usually progressive, although as a rule not rapidly so. It seems to be due to increase of mucin in the system, and is associated with absence or atrophy of the thyroid gland. Congenital m., M. of childhood, sporadic cretinism. Treatment of m.: thyroid-gland extract.
