Lead. A solid metal of a bluish white colour; more malleable than ductile: soft enough to be scratched by the nail; very fusible and oxydizable, when heated in the air, and existing, in nature, under a number of different shapes; the principal of which are those of sulphuret and oxyd. S. g. 11.352. Its use is to form oxides and salts. In its metallic state, it has no action upon the body; but when oxydized or united with an acid, it acts, in large doses, as a powerfully astringent poison.
