A mediaeval poet; born in Suabia about 809; died Aug. 18, 849. He wrote a running exegetical commentary on the Scripture, "The Orderly Gloss" ("Glossa Ordinaria"), which for long was a work of high authority in the schools; a history of the development and growth of ecclesiastical institutions and ordinances- "Of the Beginnings and Growths of Things Ecclesiastical"; "Life of St. Gall"; "Life of St. Othmar"; the poem "Vision of Saint Wettin", in which is an episode of the poet's journey to Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; another poem, "The Little Garden", treating of the plants in the garden of the poet's monastery.
