An American writer of prose and verse; born in Haddam, Conn., Feb. 3, 1744; died in New Haven, Conn., Sept. 21, 1815. In 1763 was written his best poem, "The Philosopher and Boy". In 1775 he published a poem on "Slavery"; also a number of fugitive verses. He was the great-grandfather of President Cleveland.
