An Italian statesman and historian; born at Messina, July 20, 1815; died at Florence, Sept. 5, 1863. A democratic leader, favoring Italian unity and independence, he lived part of his life as a political refugee; but played an important part in the movements of his time. His principal work was "History of Italy Narrated to the Italian People" (10 vols., 1846).
