(1801-1876), founded a school for the blind in 1832, subsequently called the Perkins Institution, of which he was superintendent till 1876, and at which Laura Bridgman was educated. From 1851 to 1853 he edited the Commonwealth. When commissioner to Santo Domingo in 1871 he advocated annexation to the United States. He was author of an "Historical Sketch of the Greek Revolution," in which he had participated.
