born in 1808, represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat from 1847 to 1851. He was a Justice of the Supreme Court from 1857 to 1868, and a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1870 t0 1880, when he retired. He was a member of the electoral commission in 1887.
