An English poet and novelist, a close friend of Dickens; born in London in 1804; died in Melbourne, Australia, July 5, 1862. He became a journalist in Australia, but fell into poverty and died in a hospital. He wrote many poems, plays, and sketches. He first published work was "The Solitary" (1831). Other well-known ones were; "The Autobiography of Jack Ketch"; "Richard Savage" (1842), which D. G. Rossetti called "a remarkable book"; and "The Cavalier", a drama produced at the Haymarket Theatre, London.
