A French novelist; born at Montauban, 1840. His novel "Cesette" (1880), a tale of village life, won the Academy's Lambert prize. It was followed by "Jennie's John" (1886); "The Blue Horse" (1888); "Singing-Weeping"; and "Bernadotte", a cabinet drama,-an antithesis of Zola's "Lourdes".
