A medical theory, founded exclusively on the parts which the humours were considered to play in the production of disease. Although traces of this system may be found in the most remote antiquity, the creation, or, at all events, the arrangement of it may be attributed to Galen, who enveloped it in metaphysical subtleties relating to the union between the elements and the four cardinal humours.
