A multifaceted syndrome characterized by the clustering of INSULIN RESISTANCE and HYPERINSULINEMIA. It is often associated with dyslipidemia (HYPERLIPIDEMIA), esential hypertension, abdominal obesity, glucose intolerance or noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DIABETES MELLITUS, NON-INSULIN-DEPENDENT) and an increased risk of cardiovascular events.
