Was organized as a territory in 1863, partly from territory ceded by Mexico to the United States by the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848) and partly from the Gadsden purchase (1853). It was first visited by the Spaniards, Nizan in 1539, and Coronado in 1540. Jesuit missions were early established among the Indians. The population of Arizona in 1890 was 59,620.
