An eminent American archaeologist and writer; born in New York in 1856, and graduated at Columbia College. He was for a time director of the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge, England, which position he resigned in order to take the directorship of the American School of Archaeology at Athens. While in this office he was a lecturer on Greek anthology at Cambridge. He is now a fellow of King's College, and a doctor and professor at Cambridge University. He has written: "Excavations at the Heraion of Argos"; "The Balance of Emotion and Intellect"; "Essays on the Art of Phidias"; "The Work of John Ruskin"; "Study of Art in Universities"; "The Argive Haraeum".
