A Peruvian poet; born at Arequipa, Peru, 1791; shot at Cuzco, March 10, 1815, having been taken prisoner in Pumacagua's rebellion. Affected by a disappointment in love, nearly all his verse was sad. Many of his lyrics were set to music, and are among the most popular songs of the Spanish-American country-folk.
