An Arabic historian; born at Bagdad about the close of the ninth century; died in Egypt, 957. He has been called "the Arabian Herodotus". His best work was "Meadows of Gold and Mines of Gems" (many editions; the latest, text with French translation, 9 vols., Paris, 1861-77).
