Consists of dissolving a small amount of the bile in concentrated sulphuric acid in an evaporating dish and warming to a temperature not higher than 70. To this mixture is added a 10 per cent. solution of cane sugar, drop by drop, with continual stirring. If bile salts are present, the fluid turns red and, upon standing, becomes gradually blue. The red fluid, when just obtained, has a characteristic absorption spectrum.
