born in 1822, graduated at the U. S. Military Academy in 1846. He refused to surrender Fort Brown to the Secessionists in 1861 by order of his superior officer, General Twiggs. He commanded the cavalry of the Army of the Potomac from 1861 to 1862. He led a division at the 1694 to 1699. He was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court during the witchcraft trials.
