(1592-1672), colonial Governor of Massachusetts, came to America in 1634. In 1635 was made deputy-governor, and Governor in 1641 by a majority of only six votes over Winthrop. In all he served thirteen years as deputy-governor and ten as Governor; was opposed to innovations in religion, and especially severe toward the Quakers.
