One of the foremost Norwegian historians; born at Christiania, Jan. 1, 1803; died there, Oct. 8, 1864. Among his many important works were a "History of Norway" (2 vols., 1865-70); "History of the Norwegian Church under Catholicism" (2 vols., 1856-58).
