A Flemish poet; born probably at Maerlant, on the island of Voorne, about 1235; died at Damme, near Bruges, 1291. He founded the didactic school of poetry in the Netherlands, and has been called "the father of Dutch poets". His chief work was "Mirror of History", begun in 1283 but left unfinished. A statue has been erected to him at Damme.
