A Scottish storywriter; born at Tweedmouth, 1804; died at Berwick-on-Tweed, Oct. 2, 1835. He edited for several years the Berwick Advertiser. He was the editor and principal author of "Tales of the Borders" (1835-40; last ed., enlarged and revised, 24 vols., 1869), of which 150,000 copies have been sold.
