A French historian; born at Paris, April 23, 1820; died there July 25, 1900. He became professor of history in the Polytechnic School in 1863, and inspector of higher education in 1876. Among his works are: "The Roman Emperors: Characters and Portraits" (1863); "History of Germany" (1872-91); "The Tribunes and the Revolutions in Italy" (1873); "Plus IX. and Victor Emmanuel: Contemporary History of Italy" (1879); "Short History of Italy, from the Fall of the Roman Empire to our Time" (4th ed. 1886).
