The organism grows by preference in horny epithelium, so that the manifestations are generally confined to the epidermis and the hair. Inflammatory reactions are present in proportion as the disease invades the deeper structures of the skin. The lesions are of a ring shape. The varieties are: tinea circinata, tinea cruris, tinea tonsurans, and tinea sycosis.
