(1791-1880), was an officer in the War of 1812. In 1839-43 he was a Democratic Congressman from Kentucky, and ran unsuccessfully in 1844 for Governor of that State. He was a major-general in the Mexican War, and was distinguished at the taking of Monterey in 1846. He was in 1848 the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Vice-President on the ticket with General Cass.
