One of the older American colleges, was founded at Carlisle, PA, in 1783, and named in honor of John Dickinson, then president of the State, who gave it valuable gifts. A Presbyterian institution from its foundation to 1833, it was then transferred to the Methodists. President Buchanan and Chief Justice Taney were among its alumni.
