A Portuguese biographer, essayist, and scholar; born in Lisbon, 1583; died at Evora, Sept. 25, 1655. He devoted many years to the study of his country's literature, giving his researches and thought a lasting form in "Various Essays" (1624), containing appreciations and biographies of Camoens and other great writers. He also wrote "Jottings of Portugal" (1655).
