(Eccl. Hist.) The Syriac, Egyptian, and other Christians of the Levant were called Melchites, or Royalists [from the Syr. melec, a king], by the Jacobites, or Eutychians, because they submitted to the imperial edicts relating to the Council of Chalcedon. They are governed by a patriarch resident in Damascus.
