(1803-1885), served several terms in the Massachusetts Legislature. He was a U.S. District Attorney from 1849 to 1853. While editor of the Boston Daily Courier from 1857 to 1865 he exerted a powerful influence on the Democratic politics of the period. He wrote "Three Eras of New England" and "Origin of the Late War.''
