A distinguished American physician and chemist; born at Philadelphia, Oct. 25, 1792; died there, March 19, 1864. He was professor of chemistry at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (1831) and the Jefferson Medical College (1841). Besides writing "A System of Chemistry for Students of Medicine" (1819), he was one of the authors of Wood and Bache's "Dispensatory of the United States" (1833), an acknowledged authority.

- An inorganic water-soluble platinum complex. After undergoing hydrolysis, it reacts DNA produce both intra interstrand crosslinks. These crosslinks appear to impair replication and transcription of DNA. The cytotoxicity cisplatin correlates with cellular arrest in G2 phase cell cycle.
