An old cant word for false dice, named from Fulham, a suburb of London, which, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, was the most notorious place for black-legs in all England; those made to throw the high numbers, from five to twelve, were called "high," and those to throw the low numbers, from ace to four, "low." hence, a sham; a make-believe.
