A distinguished American Presbyterian divine and educator; born in New York, Feb. 27, 1826; died there, March 29, 1891. He was chancellor of the University of New York 1870-81; one of the New Testament Revision Committee; and interested in every reform of his day. He wrote: "Lands of the Moslem" (1850); "Life of Jesus" (1871); "The Christian Preacher" (1880, Yale lectures for 1879-80); etc.
