(1771-1838), a naval hero, served in 1799 in the war against France, and later in the Tripolitan War. He took command in the Mediterranean in 1805, and compelled Tripoli and Tunis to sign treaties. While in command of the "President" in 1811, Rodgers had an encounter with the British "Little Belt," an affair which increased the tension between the two nations. In the ensuing war he took many prizes; he was also present at the defence of Baltimore in 1814. After peace was restored he held for many years the office of naval commissioner.
