Nat. Ord. Papaveraceae. Sex. Syst. Polyandria Monogynia. A North American plant, the rhizoma, Sanguinaria (Ph. U. S.), and seeds of which are used in medicine. They are emetic. Dose of the powder, 8 to 20 grains. They are said to reduce the velocity of the pulse, like digitalis.

Of the U. S. Ph., blood-root; the rhizome of S. canadensis. In small doses it is an expectorant, in somewhat larger doses an emetic, and in overdoses a narcotic poison. The fluidextract and the tincture of sanguinaria are official in the U. S. Ph.
