(1813-1892), jurist, was appointed an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States by President Grant in 1870, which office he held until his death. He was a member of the celebrated "Electoral Commission" of 1877, and is generally regarded as having given the casting votes which decided the contest in favor of Hayes.
