The formation of two or more cells by the separation of a mother cell into two or more nearly equal parts. There are two principal forms of cell division: 1, direct cell division, in which the cell divides without any apparent change of structure, and 2, indirect cell division, in which the cell, especially the nucleus, appears to undergo marked structural changes. See karyokinesis.
