[Gr.] In Athen. Hist., an ordinance by which Solon relieved the misery of the poorer Attic freemen. It consisted in the removal of the marks of Eupatrid ownership of land, and in lessening the amount of produce or money hitherto exacted from the tenants, the payment now taking the form of rent. This is the account given by Solon himself. Later writers introduced into it many new features, which they explained in detail.
