[Gr.] An epithet applied to works of art cunningly wrought ; from the mythical Daedalus, whose name describes him as the skillful worker. Daedalus is said to have built the labyrinth in Crete for the Minotaur. He escaped from the island on wings which he had made ; his son Icarus, flying with him, fell into the sea and was drowned.
