(1802-1886), commanded the main column of McDowell's army in the Manassas campaign in 1861 and commanded a division at Bull Run. He succeeded General Fremont in command of the Western Department. He commanded the Department of Kansas from 1861 to 1862, when he was transferred to the Southern Department. He organized the first regiment of colored troops. In 1864 he commanded the Department of West Virginia. He was president of the commission which tried the assassins of President Lincoln. He was brevetted major-general in 1865 and retired from service in 1866.
