An English bishop, reformer and celebrated translator of the first complete English Bible; born in Yorkshire, England, in 1488. He was educated at Cambridge, became an Augustine monk in 1514, and was one of the first Englishmen who adopted the doctrines of the Reformed Church of England. In 1535 he published an English translation of the Bible, which was reissued in 1537 with royal sanction. This was the first entire Bible ever published in English. He translated from the works of Luther, Calvin, Bullinger and others. He died in London and was buried Feb. 19, 1568.
