It grows in many parts of India and South America. The fruit, which is largely eaten for bread, consists of a mealy substance, Plantain meal, Conquin-lay. It is clammy; has a sweetish taste, and will dissolve in the mouth without chewing. The whole spike of fruit often weighs forty or fifty pounds. The leaves of the tree serve the Indians for tablecloths and napkins. Being smoonth and soft, they are also employed as dressing for blisters. The water from the soft trunk is astringent, and sometimes used in diarrhoea.
