A celebrated Polish poet; born at Hotoscow, Galicia, in 1741; died in Lithuania, Sept. 4, 1825. He was one of the illustrious figures at the court of Stanislaus Augustus for a time, but withdrew to his estates in 1793 and engaged in philanthropic work. His poems (1804) are remarkable for energy, simplicity, and patriotism, and still retain a hold upon the people.
