A peculiar alteration of the normal electric current of a nerve, produced by the application, outside the circuit of a galvanometer applied to that nerve to mark its normal current, of a continuous, artificial, exciting, electric current, in a distant separate part of the nerve, where by the normal current of the galvanometric circuit is either increased or diminished, according as the exciting or artificial current travels in the same direction on the nerve or not; the excitability of the nerve within the circuit of the exciting, artificial current being diminished (anelectrotonic) near the positive, and exalted (cathelectrotonic) near the negative pole.
