Under the provisions of the fisheries treaty of 1871 between Great Britain and the United States, the fishermen of the latter country were allowed to take fish along the shores of Canada and Newfoundland. The inhabitants of these States complained, and accordingly a commission of representatives from each country-met at Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1877, to determine the amount of compensation to be paid by the United States for the fishing privileges accorded them. The sum of $5,500,000 was awarded Great Britain.
