Butter or Oil Nut, White Walnut. Ord. Juglandaceae. The inner bark of the root of this tree, Juglans (Ph. U.S.), which is abundant in the United States, is used in medicine, in the form of extract, as an efficacious and mild laxative, in doses of from 10 to 20 grains. It is in the secondary list of the Pharmacopoeia of the United States.
