A notable Austrian writer on music; born at Mauth, Bohemia, Nov. 17, 1816; died in Vienna, June 28, 1876. He was trained for the civil service and served in it with distinction; but his aptitude for music, and particularly for the criticism and literature of music, led him in another direction, and he rose to eminence as the author of "The Limits of Music and Poetry", besides numerous essays and studies connected with art. His masterpiece, however, he left unfinished: "The History of Music", a work which cost him many years of labor and which he carried only to the fourth volume. He attempted musical composition, but in it won no popularity.
